Smart Writing Technique: How To Write Less & Say More

Sometimes, we all get caught up in writing these ridiculously long sentences that seem to go on and on. However, it can really prohibit our direction of what we’re trying to get across to our readers. In this article, I want to show you a smart writing technique that allows you to write less and say more!

Why Write Less?

In this day, people have shorter attention spans. people are much less patient. People want information digested as quickly as possible. Nobody nowadays wants to go through 1000’s of words an article to get the information they need. Unless it’s exceptionally enticing, most will just wade through long texts.

This is why as marketers and content creators, we need to be able to express our ideas & directions as short as possible. It’s a key as a smart writing technique.

 

Is it possible to write less?

Yes! Almost every sentence you write can be cut down and trimmed without losing quality. The key is to leave out all the extra words. You’ll want to make your sentences as brief and factual as possible.

How many words is enough?

There is no exact number of words you really need. Just keep this in mind: Cover your entire topic well enough with the fewest words possible. This is why the majority of articles are between 500 to 1000 words. Sometimes, utilizing a smart writing technique can even be more efficient to break down a really long post, and condense it into two shorter posts.

 

What are the exceptions?

There are always exceptions, it just depends on what you’re writing. How-To guides, in-depth articles and other complicated works can be longer. More often then not, the text you write can be reduced down without sacrificing quality.

 

How to make your texts crystal-clear & to-the-point in 6 steps :

1) Draft It Out

Drafting out your content before you write it is always a good idea. Making an outline is key to writing and just general smart writing technique. All great writers do this. You would be surprised at how many marketers skip this, and go right into the grind of writing. Making an outline and drafting helps structure your ideas and the flow of your article. It makes the process more of filling in the blanks than just writing everything that comes out.

2) Leave Out Unneeded Sentences

Keep in mind: Content marketing is different than creative writing. Creative writing is all about putting more words onto the page. Content marketing is about keeping it smart. Removing all text that doesn’t add anything to the core idea of the topic should be trimmed.

Just keep it short, sweet, and to the point. Your readers don’t want to go through an entire block of text just to get x information out of it.

 

3) Remove Adverbs and Phrases That Link Together

You’re not writing novels or essays. It shouldn’t flow like a novel, or essay. You don’t the complexity of those kinds of sentences to have everything looking good. Just because that style works great for novels and such, doesn’t mean it translates well to content.

Just remember to ask yourself if a specific word or phrase you use is necessary for the idea you just expressed in your sentence. If you’re just adding it in for the sake of looks, filler, or to word count, get rid of it.

4) Break Down Abstracts & Complex sentences

These easiest part about all this is is to just segment your text into smaller sections. It makes your article more digestible, and helps your readers flow over the article better.

Keep this in mind for your more complex sentences. Break them up as much as you can. You’ll honestly be amazed when you start picking apart these complex sentences and finding out just how much you can get away with while saying so little.

5) Read Things Back To Front

I find that reading text backwards actually gives you a greater perception to typos and spelling mistakes than if you were to skim through it like normal. This method is extremely helpful for fine tuning your posts. This is a step you’d want to complete once everything else is done.

 

6) Have A Non-Native Speaker Read Your Post

One of the best tips you could utilize. Remember that content marketing is all over the world, and it’s good to think of your readers who aren’t English native. You’re going to want to make sure that its’ readable, and the point is clear to them since they won’t have as a firm understanding of English.

The text should also be able to fully hold their attention and interest throughout the whole article. They should also be able to comfortably skip through or skim your article without getting lost or confused on what part’s what. Organization is huge.
